Samsung Galaxy Note 10 lite vs. Redmi K20 Pro: Which one should you buy?

This Valentine Xiaomi Nepal took a sly dig to the “lite” er note and had their shots fired towards the Korean tech giants Here we have prepared an article regarding Redmi K20 pro and Samsung Note 10 Lite. Obviously we all look forward that our daily driver meets our daily requirement and fits right under the budget. So it’s the war between the flagship killer and the “lite” ish version of the Samsung Note 10.

Obviously this is not just a price comparison cause the K20 pro is already a winner there and its recent pre valentine price cut off made it more attractive deal i.e. The market price that was previously Rs. 49,999 has been reduced to Rs. 46999. A massive 3000 rupees off and though the phone is a bit-old on the market, the deal still seems like a good one. Samsung launched its “lite” er note 10 online exclusively via Daraz at a price which the company calls the world’s best price. The phone can cost you just under Rs. 60000 and rightly so the phone can cost roughly around Rs. 72,000 on foreign stores. This is an aggressive move from the Korean phone makers. Kudos to Samsung Nepal……

The K20 Pro has been named as the flagship killer by Xiaomi and truly so it lives up to its name while Note 10 lite is I believe the Note for the masses. It technically does what note does without burning a hole in your pocket but it has its limitations.

If you have enough budget to get one of these phones but confused about getting a fixed decision. Should you be really paying more or settle for the less. Well let’s find out:

Design and Build Quality

Starting with the design, both the smartphones come loaded with interesting design language. Based on the design I personally think Redmi has pulled the rabbit out of the hat with the K20 series. A sturdy looking phone with a premium feels and finish. The body is made up of glass and metal. Coming to the Note 10 lite it is made up with what Samsung calls it “glastic“ (made up with glass and plastic combined) and metal. In my view, “glastic” is just a fancy word for plastic. Samsung claims it to be less prone to scratches but I am not quite sure “glastic” was the right move viewing its price point at which it’s available. Honestly, it feels quite cheap on hand as compared to the glass body of the K20 pro.

The so-called “glastic” is not that much of a fingerprint magnet as compared to the glass back of the K20 pro but the glass can clean easily while the plastic back fails to do so over long use. The K20 pro is provided with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection while the Note 10 “lite” hasn’t mentioned its screen protection type. The Note 10 lite here has provided that “punch hole” camera similar to its premium segments while the K20 pro has gone to the notch-less screen concept with a motorized selfie pop up camera. Both the displays look good and viewing angles are great.

Both phones don’t have water and dust protection rating so they are even in this case. However, the younger note 10 has the edge over the glass body of Redmi over accidental drops (praying that don’t happen). 😛

In summary, K20 feels and looks a lot better than the note 10 lite.

Display

Coming to the display Galaxy Note 10 lite it is equipped with a 6.7-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-O display with a screen resolution of 2400 X 1080 pixels and a 395ppi pixel density. Coming to the K20 pro, it comes with a 6.39 Samsung-made “Horizon “(as Xiaomi calls it or simply Super in other words) AMOLED notch-less display with a screen resolution of 1080 X 2340 pixels and a 403 PPI protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

The K20 pro has an excellent brightness and AMOLED panel of 450 nits but can go as high as 640 nits in bright light if you leave it on Auto mode.

Note 10 lite here houses the Super-AMOLED (as the company has different sub-branding for the panels it makes eg the S10 lite had Super-AMOLED plus). Note 10 Lite is a budget approach to the note 10 obviously so we can’t expect to have all the Dynamic AMOLED but a bit disappointed as it didn’t include the panel from the S10 lite as well. This doesn’t mean the display is bad, is a good and bright display reaching up to 622 nits under direct sunlight and up to 400 nits on the manual slider.

So it’s a draw between the devices.

Software

Both the devices run on Android while Note 10 lite houses the stock One UI while the Xiaomi’s own flagship killer run on homegrown MIUI. K20 Pro was launched with Android P out of the box but has recently been upgraded to Android 10 while the note 10 lite has Android 10 out of the box. Both the ONE UI and the MIUI come with a huge bloat-ware. The One UI is a bit impressive than the MIUI when compared side by side but still, it’s about personal preference.

Both the UIs have their perks and shortcomings, what would you prefer the MIUI or the ONE UI??

Camera:

We live in a world where a cell phone isn’t just used for a call and will continue being that. One of the most deciding factors is the lens it has got under the hood.

The Samsung Note 10 lite is equipped with an orthodox triple-camera setup which is a combination of 12-megapixel dual pixel primary shooter with f/1.7, 27 mm aperture, a 12-megapixel telephoto lens with f/2.4, 52 mm aperture telephoto lens and another 12-megapixel wide-angle lens with f/2.2, 12mm aperture. It has a 32-megapixel camera on the front with f/2.2, 25 mm aperture for the selfies. With the help of the cameras, It can record 2160p videos at 30/60 fps and 1080p videos up to 240 fps and slow.

Similarly K20 pro also has a triple camera setup which is comprised of a 48-megapixel primary shooter with f/1.8, 26mm aperture, an 8-megapixel telephoto lens with an f/2.4, 53mm aperture and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide lens with an f/2.4, 12mm aperture and motorized pop-up 20-megapixel f/2.2 aperture lens for the selfies. It can record 2160p videos at 30/60 fps and 1080p videos up to 240 fps and record slow videos up to 960 fps.

I found the Camera from the One UI more user-friendly and provides more features and truly impressed how it is perfectly suited for the camera setup for the “lite” er Note whereas the K20 pro’s camera app is less impressive with poor photo processing and doesn’t justify the Sony IMX on the back.

Samsung surprisingly has adapted its camera capabilities from its older siblings and provide a note 10 like photos from the cameras whereas K20 pro is a bit far from the competition in regards to the camera. It lags majorly on the night photography and in the daylight as well the camera is subpar compared to that of the Note 10 lite camera. On the other hand, the photos from the Note 10 lite is quite impressive providing proper colours, noise performance is also up to the high Samsung standard.

Though K20 pro has a promising camera on paper, Samsung here has a stronghold over the camera department.

Performance

Coming to performance it gets interesting, K20 Pro has the flagship chipset from the year 2019 the Snapdragon 855 and Adreno 640 GPU, making it the cheapest SD855 on the market while its recent 3000 rupees cutoff makes the deal even more attractive. Whereas the Note 10 lite houses the homegrown but old Exynos 9810 chipset with a Mali-G72 MP18 GPU. It is not that old but the chipset is from the S9 times so performance isn’t an issue here but the Snapdragon 855 is a tad bit faster and snappy compared to the Exynos 9810.

Looking at performance based on Geekbench 5.1 the K20 pro sores 2732 multi-core and 744 on the single-core whereas the Note 10 lite scores 2027 on the multi-core and 688 on the single-core. (the higher the better).

And based on AnTuTu 8 Redmi K20 Pro sits proudly on 437823 where the Note 10 lite falls as far behind as 341212. (the higher the better).

The Redmi K20 Pro is backed with an 8GB RAM and 256 GB storage (UFS 2.1) and no additional storage option whereas the Note 10 Lite is backed by 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage (UFS 2.1) with a shared SIM slot for memory expansion.

Both the devices handle the high- end games pretty well and a fair muti-app running capabilities but keeping the phones side by side the Korean tech giants comes second to the Chinese tech giants over performance.

Battery and Power

Xiaomi Redmi K20 pro is powered by 4000mAh Li-ion battery. It supports Quick Charge and the supplied 18W in-the-box charger fills about 50% in about 30 mins. Galaxy Note 10 lite, however, sets the record for the battery capacity in the Note family at 4500mAh even slightly beating the holder Note 10+. It is bundled with a 25 W charger that gets from flat to full in about 100 minutes. Here charging speed is same in both the devices but that 500mAh more battery has the edge.

Housing a two-year-old processor can be a stress for the battery but the Note 10 lite has the edge over the K20 Pro.

Special Features

Coming to Special features both the phones are equipped with a bottom facing speakers, USB Type-C connectors, and YES! -a headphone jack. Both the phone comes with an in-display fingerprint scanner and K20 pro have a motorized selfie popup whereas the Note 10 Lite is equipped with the best Samsung has to offer for a phone –The S pen. You can’t expect the S-pen to be the flagship-grade as it lacks gyro capabilities like the Note 10 but still, it’s notable that Samsung is offering a premium feature: the S-Pen on the lower budget variant. K20 Pro has included a full immersive non-notched option in the front which is worth noting and the experience is truly a good one.

Conclusion

Summing up Samsung Galaxy Note 10 lite vs. Redmi K20 Pro, both the smartphones are a good pick but K20 pro has edge over the Note 10 lite on the performance and the hardware section whereas Note 10 lite stars in the camera segment and probably a better battery. However, the major difference is the S-Pen experience which Samsung has to offer in the price segment. You can call it an S9 of today with an S-Pen.

So, if you are looking for a bang-on value for money experience, I suggest you go for the Redmi K20 Pro, you won’t be disappointed with the price you paid for it. And if money isn’t an issue and wants a flagship feature: the S-pen and the “Samsung” brand trust and value, you will have to pay 13,000 more than the K20 Pro to get it.

Xiaomi launches the Xiaomi Mi 10 and Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro

Xiaomi has just unveiled its latest 5G phones, the flagship Mi 10 series namely Xiaomi Mi 10 and Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro. The flagships were expected to make a European debut on February in the big MWC 2020 in Barcelona. However, the event got cancelled due to the COVID-19 coronavirus spread.

Overview:

The 10 and the “pro” version both features 6.67-inch 2340 X 1080 AMOLED curved edged screen with a 90 Hz (Looks like the year 2020 is going to be about fluid displays), snapdragon 865 processors, dual-mode 5G, Wi-Fi 6 (speed up to 9.6 Gbps which is an 2.7x increase compared to the Wi-Fi 5), up to 12 gigs of RAM, wireless charging and quad-camera configuration with a boastful 108 megapixels main shooter that can record 8K videos. Both phones are shipping in China before going international. (As usual).

CPU and Performance

The Mi 10 series is powered by the best Qualcomm has to offer yes the Snapdragon 865. As the SD 865 is the flagship chipset of the year, it is a no brainer that it will be offering the multi-gigabit 5G connectivity, which also delivers top-notch performance in terms of the GPU, CPU and the camera capabilities. The SD 865 has its capacity increased by 25% compared to its predecessor. The new Adreno 650 GPU has also 25% upgrade in the rendering speed while the energy consumption has decreased by 35%. The fifth-generation AIE artificial intelligence engine has enabled the AI with 2X more power resulting in better performance with videography, imagery and AI processing applications.

In terms of heat dissipation, Mi 10 series offers the most sophisticated cooling system I have seen on a phone: a 3000mm² super large vapour chamber, graphene, and a 6 layer graphite structure. It also includes copper foil heat sinks and thermal gel to improve the overall cooling capacity of the Mi 10 and ensures the device stays cool for extreme performance and the obvious fast downloading 5G networks.

Camera

The Mi 10 Pro has a 1/1.33- inch 108-megapixel sensor paired up with an optically stabilized eight element-lens (compared with seven on the Mi-10). It is accompanied by 12 megapixels f/2.0 lens for the portrait, an f/2.0 8 megapixels telephoto lens with a hybrid zoom and a 20 megapixel ultra-wide with a f/2.2 lens and a 117 FOV ( field of view).

While the Mi 10 has a 13-megapixel ultra-wide sensor with an f/2.4 lens and a 123-degree FOV and a pair of 2-megapixel f/2.4 cameras one for the macros and one for the depth-sensing alongside its boastful 108 megapixels primary shooter. It is also the first to support 8K video recording i.e. 7680 x 4320 ultra-high resolutions, while users can shoot 33 MP photos while the 8K recording is going on by a simple tap on the screen. With both OIS and the EIS support, Mi 10 ensures you have a steady capture in extreme conditions.

With a DXOMARK camera of 124 and audio score of 76, Mi 10 pro proudly sits on the top spot of the world as the world’s best camera (Photo and Video) and audio in a smartphone. It beats the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G, which was leading previously.

Aside from the camera, Mi 10 series offers by far the strongest audio capabilities of any Xiaomi devices. The audio system is equipped with symmetrical dual 1216 linear speakers with large 1.2 cc sound cavity, which provides 100% more output volume than the predecessor.

Battery and Storage

The MI 10 pro is, of course, the higher specced phone with up to 512 gigs of onboard storage while the non-pro version can get up to 256 gigs of onboard storage. Both the phones use the UFS 3.0 and the LPDDR5 RAM technologies. 50W charging (through the cable) is provided in the pro while 30W on the 10 version and pro edges out with a slightly better display as well. But surprisingly the Pro houses a smaller 4500 mAh battery compared to 4780 mAh on the Mi 10. The reversible charging is provided as well which means the phone can output up to 10W for reverse charging.

Other notable features in this series are the in-display fingerprint, IR blaster for easy home appliances remote control, multifunctional NFC and a linear haptic motor for realistic touch response.

Mi 10 comes in glossy Ice Blue, Peach Gold and Titanium Silver. Mi 10 Pro, features a matte-ish in Pearl White and Starry blue with AG coating for more premium hand feel and minimization of the fingerprint. The Mi10 ships in China for about 3999 Yuan and big brother will be available for about 4999 Yuan.

One of the well-known traits of Redmi phones is undoubtedly the outstanding camera work, and Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Pro doesn’t fail to impress the audience. 108 MP (Primary) rear camera following 5 MP (telephoto), 12 MP (telephoto), 20 MP (ultrawide), 2 MP (macro) cameras with features like 50 x Digital Zoom, 5 x Optical Zoom with Dual LED flash is something breathtaking. The photo capturing experience will get way more fascinating.

Not only the photos but selfies will also be no far from them with a 32 MP front camera which will click on great quality photos but sadly with no flash.

Battery

Well, a phone runs on the customer’s demand, but what makes the need to fulfil is undoubtedly the excellent battery of the phone. Yes, they are here Samsung unveiled a rival to the Moto RAZR, their own Galaxy Z flip which was teased 48 hours before the event for the new Galaxy S20 lineup. The company that sells the most smartphones have unveiled their flagship for the year and like the yesteryears, they are the first flagship for 2020. The Galaxy Z Flip may steal all the headlines but that device is here to take on the reborn Motorola RAZR whereas the new Galaxy S20 has a bigger competition: namely Apple’s iPhone, Google’s Pixel and obviously the exiled Huawei’s high-end phones.

Where did the S11 go??

Last year had S10 and it plus version preceded by the S9 and its plus version. So why the 20 not the 11? Samsung must have decided to take their version of the phones to year’s number i.e. the 20 from S20 is of 2020. This can be a marketing strategy as the human brain is automated to think the bigger the better. 😛 However, Samsung is the first to make this move which eventually others might follow or not we have to wait and watch.

S20 lineup has 3 phones that are one more than the flagship from the previous year but later added with the S10E (a budget approach for the premium feel) and a separate S10 5G but this year Samsung has integrated 5G to all its big boys so no separate model.

Kudos to Samsung as the latest and the biggest bad boy from the company has brought a phone that has turned heads and raised for their competitions by having features like:

Introduction to 100X zoom
120 Hz of AMOLED display for multimedia and gaming
Offers 8K video recording
Battery capacity up to 5000 mAh for a flagship-grade phone within its sleekness.
It has brought a “Single Take” mode that captures 10 photos and 4 videos from just a button push
Integrates two forms of the 5G technology Sub-6 (standard) and millimetre wave (superfast)

And surprisingly it has followed Apple into naming the least expensive phone in the series with its standard branding i.e. iPhone 11 last year and this year the Galaxy S20. I personally think iPhone 11 was the most popular one among Apple buyers but I personally think people will go for the plus version than the regular 20 version.

Samsung Galaxy S20’s Overview:

The Galaxy S20 has the Sub 6 version of the 5G which is common and the standard and offers a broad coverage while the bigger brothers of the S20 the ultra and the plus variant offer Sub-6 and mmWave which provided higher speed in selected areas. Samsung redesigned its camera system resulting in improvement of the most asked by the users i.e. Low light photos, sharpness and zoom.

The new S20 and S20 plus have 64-megapixel shooter while the ultra-version has the eye-popping 108-megapixel shooter out of the box. These numbers will potentially improve the clarity of the photos but they’ are stitching the neighbouring pixels and the photos taken from the multiple lenses so comparing with DSLRs and the mirrorless camera isn’t fair.

The other big upgrade is the optical zoom where Samsung tried outrunning its competitors The regular and the plus variant get a 30X zoom while the Ultra variant gets a 100X hybrid zoom (yes, you heard it right 100X). The P30 Pro from Huawei last year had 50X so Samsung decided to challenge it by doubling the numbers. The S20 ultra uses the “folded zoom lens” and they explained that it folds sideways to the right of the lens. I must say it is pretty innovative and the makers are in for a fierce and aggressive competition.

Battery:

The Korean tech giants upgraded their battery capacity and here’s how the models measure up 4000mAh for the S20 4500mAh for the plus and Mammoth 5000mAh for the Ultra and power-wise all the models of the new S20 come with a 25W fast charger in the box whereas the Ultra has support for the 45W super-fast charging technology for which you buy a charger separately. They might have copied this from the Apple as well but comparatively the new iPhones come with an 18W fast charger.

However, the extension of the battery and fast charging is to power the 120 Hz AMOLED display. The display is going to be fluid, crisp and more smooth while playing videos and games. Most of today’s phones have 60 Hz while the new in the bunch like the OnePlus 7 Pro and the Pixel has 90 Hz displays. The new iPad Pro has the 120 Hz display.

The fast refreshing screen is an added advantage as all three S20s have 8K video recording at 24 fps and it makes a great viewfinder. S20 has also introduced the “ Night Hyperlapse” mode that can make light streaks from cars in motion, for example, is a definite tryout after getting hands on it.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Pricing and Availability:

Pre-booking has been started in certain regions including India. However, the Galaxy S20 series will be available for pre-booking by the first week of March in Nepal. As the price of the S20 series is live in India we can expect the launch of S20 ultra but, let’s see if S20 ultra paves its way to Nepal.

Regarding the pricing, the Galaxy S20 starts at INR. 66,999 (NRs. 1,07,198)for the 8GB+128GB base variant. Galaxy S20 Plus starts at INR. 73,999 (NRs. 1,18,398) for the 8GB+128GB variant whereas the Galaxy S20 Ultra starts at INR. 92,999 (NRs. 1,48,798) for the 12GB+128GB base variant.

Realme has recently entered the Nepali market and has popped up with a new member of Realme 5 series “Realme 5i“. Realme has been dominating the smartphone market of India due to its aggressive pricing and specifications. This device is a strong contender for smartphones under Rs. 20,000 in Nepal.

Realme 5i Overview

Realme 5i features a 6.5 inch IPS panel with the resolution of 710 x 1660 pixels and gorilla glass on the front. Talking about the built of this phone, it comes with a polycarbonate body with a wavy texture on the back providing you with a better grip. Following the trend, it comes with a notch on the front which houses the selfie camera.

Even in this price range, Realme is offering a quad-camera setup aligned vertically on the back of the phone with a flashlight. Realme 5i has 12 MP (wide), 8 MP (ultra-wide), 2 MP (dedicated macro camera), 2 MP (depth sensor) camera setup which is capable of recording video up to 4K. The selfie camera is an 8MP sensor which is certainly a down part for this device.

ASUS, a Taiwan based company has once again made another revolutionary step through the release of the ZenBook Pro Duo. Its was announced in Computex 2019. Now, ASUS Nepal has confirmed that they will be launching ZenBook Pro Duo in Nepal very soon. The most interesting feature of this machine is its second screen which adds more room to your workspace. Besides that, it comes with up to eight-core core i9 processor and displays offering a wide colour gamut which makes ASUS ZenBook Pro Duo a strong contender as a Content Creation champ.

ASUS ZenBook Pro Duo Overview

From the outside, the ZenBook Pro Duo looks like any other beefed Windows laptop weighs 2.9Kg. The main display measures 15.6 inches and is built with an OLED panel which features a 3840×2160 4K UHD resolution. It has slim bezels for an 89% screen-to-body ratio offering a user more immersive viewing experience. It has a similar keyboard like any other ZenBook but has the odd keyboard placement due to secondary display. The secondary display measures 5.5 inches and has a matte finish to minimize glare.

When it comes to power, It is powered by up to a 9th generation eight-core core i9 processor. Along with the latest Nvidia GeForce GTX 2060 graphics which provides major improvements in performance, memory bandwidth, and power efficiency. Coupled with up to 32GB RAM this machine can deliver smooth and stutter-free performance. With this power, any user can do tasks ranging from gaming to content creation with ease.

Do not consider this machine to rush like your desktop-grade workstation but for a mobile machine, its a powerhouse due to its specifications & performance. Along with performance, storage comes with PCIe SSD which goes from 256GB to 1TB. With the compatibility of WiFi 6, you have speedier wireless connectivity standard.

Conclusion

ASUS has provided 8-Cell battery (71 Wh) but considering the power, you’re only really likely to get three hours away from a socket. If you travel most of the time don’t forget to carry your charger. It’s targeted to the creative user but they are more likely to go with other options for work on the go device as it has poor battery life. Considering the price, ZenBook Pro Duo is a mobile powerhouse but with some compromise, poor battery life, limited port selection, uncomfortable design.

This time Xiaomi is back with a new device – Redmi Note 8 Pro. Redmi Note 8 launched in Nepal on 20th November 2019. The good thing about the company is that it manufactures great devices on an affordable price range. Redmi Note 8 price in Nepal is also available here.

Overview

Redmi Note 8 Pro has 6.53 inches IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 84.9% screen to body ratio. The screen has a good viewing angle and the colour production is also good. It has a resolution of 1080*2340 pixels and has ~395 PPI density.

We are only getting Android 9.0 (Pie) with MIUI 10. Sooner or later Xiaomi might provide software updates with Android 10. As the main processor, a 12nm chipset Mediatek Helio G90T has been used which should be able to handle the performance of the device.
